Chilean Fjords, Patagonia and Antarctica Cruise
This is a 19-day holiday of almost unbelievable
adventure to an area of the world that is still largely undiscovered
by tourism.
Patagonia - the Silent South - is famous for
its mountain scenery, archipelagos, mighty glaciers and magnificent
fjords. Our cruise also visits the awe-inspiring continent
of Antarctica where you’ll encounter
penguins, seals and icebergs. The visits to Antarctica are
complemented by a cruise through the Chilean Fjords
of Patagonia.

After rounding Cape Horn and
crossing the Drake Passage you’ll spend
four days exploring Antarctica with its quite unique landscape
and wildlife. Here you can visit penguin colonies, see majestic
icebergs float by and watch seals basking in the sun.
The visits to Antarctica are followed by a cruise through
the Chilean Fjords of Patagonia.
The southern Andes Mountains, with numerous
volcanoes among them, form a stunning backdrop to the lush
and green coastal landscape, dotted with colourful fishing
villages.

Your ship, the Nordnorge, will only carry 350 passengers
to ensure highest levels of service. The atmosphere on board
is informal with an intimate atmosphere. The ship's Polar
Circle boats will be used for going ashore and for close encounters
with Antarctica.
The expedition team are on hand to assist with information.
Specially invited guest lecturers will talk about geology,
climate, culture, wildlife, and exploration.

| DAY
1 |
Depart on an
evening flight via Madrid for Buenos Aires. |
| DAY
2 |
Morning arrival
in Buenos Aires and transfer to your hotel for overnight
stay. Optional excursions such as a city tour or a tango
show are available. |
| DAY
3 |
After breakfast
transfer to the airport for a flight to Ushuaia. There’s
a brief tour before we board MS Nordnorge and depart Ushuaia
to start our voyage towards the Drake Passage. |
| DAY 4-5 |
During our crossing of
the Drake Passage lectures will be held about our destination.
In the afternoon of Day 5 we arrive in Antarctica, one
of the most beautiful, breathtaking and unpolluted places
on Earth. |
| DAY 6-9 |
The ice and weather conditions
will determine our course during the next few days. Among
the places we plan to visit are Yankee Harbour and Half
Moon Island – with spectacular views of the surrounding
mountains. This is the natural habitat of chinstrap penguins,
kelp gulls and Antarctic terns – whales are also
common in this area.
Other landing sites may include Deception Island, Paradise
Bay, Couverville Island, Neko Harbour, Vernadsky Base
and Port Lockroy, known for its gentoo penguins and blue-eyed
cormorants. In the afternoon of Day 9 we again head out
across the Drake Passage. |
| DAY 9-10 |
It’s 800 kilometres
from the Antarctic Peninsula to Cape Horn and our crossing
will take some 35 hours. On board there will be lectures
about Chile and our future ports of call, including Cape
Horn. |
| DAY 11 |
Today we sail the waters
between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans to Cape Horn situated
at almost 56º South. Weather permitting, we’ll
drop anchor and spend some time exploring this desolate
and yet poetic piece of land at the end of the world.
We then sail the Moroy Channel towards southern Patagonia,
entering the Beagle Channel, with impressive views of
this strategically important region. |
| DAY 12 |
We arrive at the port
of Punta Arenas where there’s time to visit some
of the historic sites.
You can join an optional excursion to the ‘pampas’,
with a typical Chilean dinner at an ‘estancia’.
We leave Punta Arenas late evening and sail north along
the Magellan Strait. |
| DAY 13 |
A feast for the senses,
fjords and mountains dominate our experiences today. We’ll
enter a fjord to take a closer look at one of the many
magnificent glaciers that calve directly into the ocean. |
| DAY 14 |
We spend most of the day
sailing through narrow straits in an area of outstanding
natural beauty and rich in wildlife.
The ship’s panorama lounges are ideal for appreciating
the wonderful, sweeping vistas. We plan to land in the
small fishing village of Puerto Eden, one of the few places
in this region inhabited mainly by the native Indians.
Alternatively, we may visit Caleta Tortel. Early in the
evening MS Nordnorge continues her journey towards the
"Golfo de Penas" (Gulf of Sorrows). |
| DAY 15 |
We reach the fjord port
of Puerto Chacabuco, where there is an optional excursion
by bus through a dramatic valley to the modern city of
Coihaique, the largest city in the region. |
| DAY 16 |
We will sail through an
archipelago formed by the Gauitecas Islands where a good
example of the breathtaking Patagonian "jungle"
can be found before we head for Castro, on the ‘Spanish’
island of Chiloé, a strongly religious community.
The area is known for its music, dance, craft traditions
and a wealth of spellbinding myths and legends. |
| DAY 17 |
Arrive in Puerto Montt
late morning. Here we bid farewell to the ship and her
crew after a memorable voyage before being transferred
to the airport for the flight to Santiago. Transfer to
your hotel for an overnight stay. |
| DAY 18 |
Transfer to the airport
for a return flight via Madrid to the UK. |
| DAY 19 |
Arrive back in the UK. |
On every other
departure the holiday operates in reverse. You'll fly
to Santiago and return from Buenos Aires.
Extra nights in Buenos Aires and /or Santiago can be arranged.
Prices from £60 per person. |
