| Itinerary
(Tuesday Departures) |
|
| DAY
1 |
Depart on an
evening flight via Madrid for Buenos Aires. |
| DAY
2 |
Morning arrival
in Buenos Aires. On the way to the port there is a short
orientation tour of this beautiful city. Embark MS Nordnorge
and in the afternoon we depart on our voyage towards the
Falkland Islands, sailing first along the coast of Argentina.
|
| DAY
3-5 |
At sea. During
the crossing of the South Atlantic Ocean, lectures will
be held on board about the Falkland Islands, the wildlife
that we’ll encounter here, and their history. |
| DAY 6-7 |
The Falklands are located
in the South Atlantic, 300 miles from Cape Horn and some
1,000 miles north of Antarctica. They consist of two main
islands and approximately 700 smaller ones. Captain John
Strong on the HMS Welfare made the first recorded landing
in 1690. There are around 2,400 inhabitants today.
The Islands have a unique Sub-Antarctic eco-system with
70 different animal species, including the blackbowed
albatross, the striated caracara, elephant seals, southern
sea lions and five species of penguins including the king
penguin. There are also about 347 species of plants growing
wild.
The islands have a coastline of dramatic cliffs, unspoilt
beaches and sheltered tussock grasslands. The capital
of the islands is Stanley, a good starting point for many
interesting excursions. Optional tours will be available
during our stay here, or you can explore the town independently. |
| DAY 8-9 |
At sea: On the way to
South Georgia there will be lectures about the island
and its fascinating history of exploration and wildlife.
|
DAY
10-11 |
We’ll spend two days
in South Georgia and visit some of the many historical
sites. Among the places we hope to visit are Grytviken
Whaling Station with Shackleton’s grave, a museum
and a church from 1913 and the old whaling station Strømsness,
where Shackleton sought help to rescue his crew left behind
on Elephant Island.
The wildlife in South Georgia is very different to that
which you’ll experience in Antarctica and you can
expect to see black-browed albatrosses, cape petrels,
giant petrels, Antarctic prions, king penguins, rockhopper
penguins as well as fur and elephant seals. Reindeer were
introduced by whalers in the 19th century and they continue
to thrive. |
DAY
12-13 |
At sea: We leave South
Georgia and head out across the Scotia Sea towards Antarctica.
On board you can join lectures about our fascinating destination.
We plan to arrive in Antarctica in the afternoon of Day
14. |
DAY
14-17 |
Among the places we plan
to visit during our time in ‘the White Continent’
are Yankee Harbour, Half Moon Island - with spectacular
views of the surrounding mountains, Deception Island,
Paradise Bay, Courverville Island, Neko Harbour, Vernadsky
Base and Port Lockroy. We can expect to see plenty of
wildlife, such as the gentoo, adelie and chinstrap penguins,
kelp gulls and Antarctic terns – whales are also
common in this area. After some memorable days we leave
Antarctica and head out across the Drake Passage.
|
DAY
17-18 |
It will take around 35
hours to cross the Drake Passage and on board the ship
you’ll be able to relive some of the experiences
of this fascinating voyage in a series of lectures. We’ll
pass by Cape Horn before continuing to Ushuaia. |
| DAY 19 |
Arrival at Ushuaia and
disembarkation. On the way to the airport for our flight
to Buenos Aires there’s a brief tour of this southernmost
town in the world. In Buenos Aires you’ll be transferred
to your hotel for an overnight stay. Optional excursions
are available to book locally. |
| DAY 20 |
You’ll have some
time to explore some of the city’s many attractions
before a transfer to the airport for your flight home.
|
| DAY 21 |
Arrive back in the UK |
